We are honored to welcome Dr. Jackson Crawford to the Great Northern Viking Festival for a special guest appearance in June 2026.
Known for bringing Old Norse language, myth, and Viking-age literature to life for modern audiences, Dr. Crawford has become one of the most recognized voices in Norse studies. His appearance adds a rare and exciting opportunity for festival guests to experience deeper insight into the world, words, and stories of the Viking Age.
We are honored to welcome Hurstwic back to the Great Northern Viking Festival for June 2026.
Led by Dr. William R. Short (USA) and Reynir A. Óskarson (Iceland), Hurstwic are internationally respected Viking combat experts whose work combines experimental archaeology, saga study, and live martial testing to bring Viking warfare to life. Co-authors of Men of Terror, they also have a new book, Violence in Viking Society: Brutal Warriors or Just Farmers? coming this fall.

New this year, we are excited to partner with Wyldwolf Games to bring a Viking-themed D&D gaming area to the Great Northern Viking Festival.
Dungeons & Dragons is an interactive tabletop storytelling game where players become characters in an adventure guided by a Game Master.
This new area will offer a fun and imaginative way to experience Viking-inspired storytelling at the festival, with discounted pre-registration through Wyldwolf Games registration page.
The Viking Strongman Challenge Area will bring strength, spectacle, and warrior spirit to the Great Northern Viking Festival.
Guests can watch Bo Axlar perform impressive feats of power, balance, and control, including hammer levering, overhead pressing, and other crowd-pleasing demonstrations.
Interactive challenges will also give festivalgoers a chance to test their own strength and step into the action.

This year, festival guests will also have the chance to learn more about the famous Kensington Runestone through a special scheduled presentation connected to the Runestone Museum. With the museum’s director joining us, this feature offers a unique opportunity to explore one of Minnesota’s most discussed and intriguing historical artifacts and its connection to Nordic history.
Sunday at the Great Northern Viking Festival is Family Day, with a special focus on activities and experiences for families with children. Be sure to visit Little Vikings’ Landing, our dedicated kids area, for storytelling, crafts, games, and interactive fun for younger Vikings and their grown-ups.

From the Thingstead stage to the Viking Village, the festival grounds will be filled with scheduled demos, interactive experiences, contests, artisan goods, food, and hands-on fun. Throughout the weekend, guests can enjoy Viking combat, birds of prey, Viking-age cooking, blacksmithing interactions, games, challenges, and more across the festival grounds.
